What is a "catastrophic implosion" and why it happened to Titan
An implosion is the opposite of an explosion. It occurs when the pressure inside a confined space becomes greater than the external pressure, causing the container to collapse inward. This is different from an explosion, where pressure builds up and is released outward, causing an expansion or rupture of the container.
To demonstrate implosion, a common experiment involves heating an empty soda can and then submerging it in freezing liquid with the opening facing inward. The drastic change in temperature causes the can to collapse upon itself.

In the case of the Titan submersible, concerns were raised in 2018 about its ability to withstand the pressures it would encounter during its deep-sea expedition. While the vessel was designed with materials like carbon fiber and titanium, and its depth rating was around 13,000 feet (4,000 meters), it had not undergone certification by a qualified third-party organization.
It was later revealed that the viewport of the Titan submersible was only certified up to 1,300 meters, which is insufficient to reach the depth where the Titanic wreckage lies.
The wreckage of the Titan submersible was discovered by an uncrewed deep-sea robot deployed from a Canadian ship. OceanGate Expeditions, the company operating the submersible, confirmed the deaths of the five passengers, including their CEO Stockton Rush, in a statement following the discovery.

The debris field of the Titan included five major fragments, such as the tail cone and sections of the pressure hull. The Coast Guard officials noted that the debris field indicated a catastrophic implosion of the vehicle, but there was no mention of any human remains being sighted.
The wreckage of the Titan submersible was found approximately 488 meters from the bow of the Titanic wreckage, at a depth of 4 kilometers below the surface.
