MEPs on the Committee on Petitions have called on the Council to approve the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen free travel area by the end of 2023. In a resolution adopted on Tuesday with 25 votes in favour, 0 against and 0 abstentions, MEPs on the committee called on the Council to vote in favour of admitting Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area by the end of 2023, given that both countries have already met the necessary requirements for admission.

They deplore the Council's decision of 8 December 2022 to reject the accession of these two countries 'without providing any legal justification relating to the accession criteria'. "A larger Schengen area without border controls would have made the EU stronger," MEPs argue.The fact that Romania and Bulgaria are still outside the visa-free travel area represents an important social and economic burden for the businesses and populations of both countries, MEPs say.
