Minimum wage of 940 leva: Employers and unions have different opinions. Some believe it's possible, while others don't consider the project realistic

The proposed budget, which will be presented to the next parliament by the cabinet, aims to raise the minimum wage to 940 leva per month from next year. According to the three-year medium-term forecast of the Ministry of Finance, by 2025 the minimum wage should be increased to 1,038 leva, and a year later to 1,128 leva.

The trade unions have stated that the increase in the minimum wage is a step in the right direction, but they consider it "modest." According to businesses, this "aggressive" wage increase, as well as the planned tax changes, are an attack on them. They have warned that these actions would lead to an increase in the price of goods and services, as well as an increase in inflation.

The increase in the minimum wage will affect entire sectors such as tourism, hospitality, restaurant industry, trade, light industry, partly transport, agriculture, and construction, where between 70-80% of employees are paid the minimum wage. Dr. Shterio Nozharov, an economic advisor to the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce, referred to data from "Eurostat," which shows that Bulgaria currently has the highest rate of increase in labor costs, even surpassing the average European level.

Vanya Grigorova emphasized that from the very beginning, the Confederation of Labor "Podkrepa" was against the tax relief for restaurant owners, as it did not provide any relief to households.Regarding the windfall profits tax, Grigorova commented that these actions are delayed. According to her, a political measure to correct the market was missed.

Vanya Grigorova added that the "windfall profit" tax is necessary, but it does not solve the general problem with the tax system. According to her, this is a good step towards determining a second tax rate for profit tax for some sectors or enterprises. According to Professor Nozharov, if the policies of the previous government continue, the budget should have a deficit of 7 to 9%, which is over BGN 15 billion. He believes that raising the minimum wage is part of the problem. The economic adviser to the Chamber of Commerce added that it is time for the unions and employers to make the government talk about income-related economic policy.
